I was reading the thread on lists, and folks were mentioning the Ultimate Unexpected Deadheads: Tucker Carlson and Ann Coulter.

Well, Tucker Carlson I can see. But Ann Coulter? Yikes! Not to perpetuate a stereotype or anything, but I'm afraid this does bring up an image of ... Ann Coulter on acid. HEEEELLLLP!!!!

So anyway, I googled her. Turns out she claims she never even smoked marijuana. Also, she claims she can't remember her first show. Does anyone not remember their first show? Is that possible?!?

So here's Ann Coulter, listing her fave songs, complaining that folks only dislike Alabama Getaway because it was commercial, and dissing Phil:

Ack. Well, this is too much for my blood pressure late at night. But just for the record, I don't hate Alabama Getaway, I actually like it. I mean, it would never come up among favorites, but I enjoy it.

The thing I find most disturbing about all this is that it makes Ann Coulter a tad more human. It gives her a dimension I had no idea was there. That is frightening. Perhaps it is a sinister plot and the interview is fake. Yes, that must be it.

Hmmm, I don't "hate" Alabama Getaway, but it's one of the things I'll tend to skip past, though not always. I do think of it as part of a chunk of mid-era songs that, to me, are rather uninspired and bland. It's as if Hunter lost the muse for a while and then regained it for Black Muddy River and So Many Roads. Just IMO.

AR , you are in Nepal . Why let AC disturb you ?
That 's her job . That , and selling books .

Now look at a mountain and breathe , One , Two
You are thinking only pleasant thoughts , Three , Four
Your child loving the move and adjusting , Five , Six
The family getting a rhythm and all healthy , Seven , Eight
A deep breath , let the West out , Nine , Ten

Oh, I'm not disturbed by her. It's all part of the sense of the absurd. Yesterday we saw a bunch of Buddhist monks driving a jeep. Granted, that was a better case of the absurd, but Coulter as a Deadhead is definitely there, too.

Sorry, it's too well written, thought out and comical to be a real interview. Great satire though.

Nah. A satire would have been more heavyhanded -- for instance, by having her praise Donna and admit to acquiring her political views while tripping to Day Job. But what's most interesting is that you can see her using the same "logic" that she does when she bloviates on air.

For instance, she misreads why people may not like Alabama Getaway, implying it's some anti-business bias rather than a reaction to the song.

And the Phil comment twists what is generally said in that regard, too. "When Phil is on, the band is on" is not the same as "Phil makes the band." She sort of invents an argument there, implying that somehow there were folks who didn't see Jerry as The Main Ingredient, and that JG's death proved them wrong. Which is a paper tiger.

Also, she's real slippery, not naming actual shows and so on.

So it seems to me like typical Ann Coulter thinking, applied to the GD instead of politics ...

Incidentally, I have nothing against Ann Coulter identifying as a Deadhead, right along with the Hell's Angels, Tipper Gore, and anyone else who likes the music. It's not as if there's a Deadhead Test -- beyond, of course, crying over the fate of sentient beings :-)

I'd actually be curious to know what shows she really went to, though, since I suspect, from her age and where she went to college, that we'd have overlapped some ... and that's just SUCH a funny thought.

"I don't remember my first show, sounds like heavy duty drugs to me! Everybody I know remembers the first time tey went.

Do some Googling on the internet. You'll find the story by one of Coulter's ex-boyfriends. He says that she nipped on his bottle OJ laced with LSD. Then she gave him some head in the Spectrum during drums and space...

See, now, that kind of story seems bogus to me.

I do think it's funny that she doesn't remember her first show. I guess I could see going to a show and not having a big reaction one way or another much -- maybe you went to lots of rock concerts and the GD didn't make much of an impression -- and then "getting it" later. But mostly, yeah, people seem to remember their first shows. Good gosh, at least the location!

See, that part I believe, because I also couldn't tell you my first or last shows, I'm in that category you mention of "getting it later." I only went to a handful of shows and they're all a blur. It's only from reconstructing it on the archive and from conversations with friends from the time that I have a pretty good idea some of the shows I was at. But I do remember where.

It's the other part that sounds bogus to me -- the story by the alleged boyfriend. Sounds more like dumb internet BS than reality.

I don't remember every show either. It's definitely "educated guesswork." I'm impressed by people who collected their ticket stubs and can tell you, years later, what happened during such-and-such song on such-and-such date. I'm just thrilled when a song I remember is really on the list, LOL!

But really, she says she went to 70-plus shows and had some 50 tapes. Which isn't casual. How can you know a number of shows without having reconstructed some kind of list? (My curiosity, of course, is for purely trivial reasons. Like, for instance, I know I was at the same show where Manasha first met Jerry by giving him a pumpkin or something from the audience, and that's kinda fun, in a totally trivial, gossipy way. Not that I remember any pumpkins. So for sheerly dumb reasons, it would be fun to know, "Hey, me and Ann Coulter? Same show!")

Yeah. If anybody would be likely to have ex-boyfriends taking revenge on the internet, it's Ann Coulter. The ones she didn't eat for breakfast the next morning, that is.

Yeah. The folks I lived with in college were like that. I couldn't relate at the time.

Or pretend ex-boyfriends. Just people who hate her. I don't hate her; I just think she's the Wicked Witch of the West, without the cool monkeys. But I expect there are people who take her more seriously and would construct fake internet porn-gossip around her.
